Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that affects communication and behaviour. Although autism can be diagnosed at any age, it is said to be a “developmental disorder” because symptoms generally appear in the first two years of life.

Symptoms are characterised by problems in the following areas of development: social interaction, communication skills, and Individual children with autism spectrum disorders may present with very different sets of symptoms, and with widely varying degrees of severity. Because there can be a wide variety and severity of symptoms, Autism is known as a ‘spectrum’ disorder.

Although ASD can be a lifelong disorder, treatments, and services can improve a person’s symptoms and the ability to function in life.
